From I-94, take Exit 183 (US-12 / Michigan Ave / Washtenaw) or Exit 185 (Huron St). Go north to Huron River Dr, then east.

From the north, take US-23 to Plymouth Rd east to Earhart Rd to Huron River Dr. Complicated but scenic.

Morning peak on Washtenaw at Huron Pkwy is 7:30 AM to 8:15 AM. The 7 AM shift avoids the worst of it.

Evening peak on Washtenaw westbound is 4:45 PM to 5:30 PM. The 7 PM shift change clears it.

Ypsilanti Depot Town is eight minutes via Cross St to Huron River Dr. Great price, historic housing, walkable downtown.

Ypsilanti Normal Park is ten minutes via EMU campus and Washtenaw. Cheaper than Ann Arbor comparables by a third.

Ypsilanti College Heights is nine minutes via Clark Rd. Similar pricing to Normal Park.

Superior Township subdivisions (Silverleaf, parts of Stonebridge) are ten to twelve minutes.

The east-side Ann Arbor neighborhoods (Glacier Highlands, Huron Hills) are ten minutes via Huron Pkwy to Huron River Dr.

Ann Arbor Hills via Washtenaw east is fifteen minutes.

Burns Park via Washtenaw east is eighteen minutes at 6:45 AM.

Downtown Ann Arbor and Kerrytown are eighteen to twenty minutes via Geddes or Washtenaw.

Packard Stadium and Arbor Oaks are fifteen minutes via Platt Rd.

Saline via US-12 or State St is twenty-five minutes.

Canton and Plymouth are twenty minutes via I-94 east.

Neighborhoods within 25 to 40 minutes

Belleville via I-94 east is twenty minutes. Affordable, lake nearby.

Canton via Ford Rd is twenty-five minutes. More suburban than Ann Arbor.

Livonia via I-275 and I-94 is thirty minutes.

Dexter via M-14 and Huron River Dr is twenty-five minutes.

Milan via US-23 south and I-94 east is twenty-five minutes.

Dearborn and west Detroit via I-94 are thirty-five minutes.

Why Ypsilanti often beats Ann Arbor for St. Joe's

The hospital is east of Ann Arbor. If you live in Ann Arbor, you are crossing the whole city to get to work.

Ypsilanti housing runs twenty-five to forty percent below Ann Arbor comparable homes.

Ypsilanti Normal Park and College Heights have the kind of old-neighborhood character people chase in Burns Park, at a third less.

Depot Town has restaurants, bars, the Huron River, and a farmers market.

The drive from Ypsilanti to St. Joe's is short and easy.

School district trade-off: Ypsilanti Community Schools have a different profile than Ann Arbor Public Schools. Families often make their call based on that alone.

For St. Joe's nurses and techs without school-age kids, Ypsilanti is usually the right answer.

Parking and last quarter mile

St. Joe's parking is simpler than Michigan Medicine. Surface lots and structures closer to the buildings.

Shift change at 7 AM fills the closer structures. If you arrive at 6:45 AM, you are in a close slot. At 7:05 AM, you are walking.

The medical office buildings on McAuley Dr have their own parking.

Snow clearing on the campus roads is generally fast because it is a hospital campus and has the budget for it.

What breaks this commute

Washtenaw Ave is the main east-west artery on this side. When it has lane closures or a crash, there is no good alternate. Clark Rd is the detour.

I-94 closures between Exit 183 and Exit 185 back up Huron St and Washtenaw.

EMU football and basketball games draw some traffic through Ypsilanti, but the impact is light.

UM football Saturdays do not hit St. Joe's directly but can affect Washtenaw westbound as drivers route east.

Winter ice on Huron River Dr east of Dixboro is real. If the forecast is icy, take Washtenaw to Clark Rd.

Airport traffic on I-94 at peak hours can back up the Ypsilanti exits.
